Spring Home Maintenance Checklist Near JBLM

Spring in the South Sound brings longer days — and a reminder that Pacific Northwest winters are hard on homes. Between heavy rain, moss growth, and months of moisture, homes near Joint Base Lewis–McChord need a little extra attention this time of year.

Use this practical spring maintenance checklist to protect your investment and avoid costly repairs later.

Winter storms and constant moisture can loosen shingles and clog drainage systems.

What to do:

  • Check for missing, curled, or damaged shingles
  • Remove moss buildup (very common in the South Sound)
  • Clear gutters and downspouts
  • Ensure water flows at least 3–5 feet away from your foundation

Pro tip: Moss left untreated can shorten the life of your roof.

The damp climate around the Puget Sound makes proper drainage critical.

What to do:

  • Look for standing water near your home
  • Confirm soil slopes away from the foundation
  • Inspect crawl spaces for excess moisture
  • Test your sump pump (if you have one)

Water issues caught early are much easier — and cheaper — to fix.

Moisture and temperature changes can wear down seals and exterior materials.

What to do:

  • Inspect caulking around windows and doors
  • Replace cracked or peeling sealant
  • Check window screens for tears
  • Pressure wash siding to remove mildew

Before summer arrives, make sure your systems are running efficiently.

What to do:

  • Replace furnace filters
  • Schedule an A/C service
  • Check outdoor faucets for leaks
  • Inspect under sinks for slow drips

Spring growth can cause hidden problems if left unchecked.

What to do:

  • Trim shrubs away from siding and rooflines
  • Remove moss from lawn areas
  • Reseed thin or patchy grass
  • Check fences for winter rot
  • Ensure crawl spaces access is secured
  • Ensure crawl space screens are intact
